Im trying to get RID of the msn icon on my desktop. I have tried to drag it to the recycle bin (it wont go there), I have created a folder and tried to put it there 1st and then delete that folder.
When I right click on it there is no 'delete' option .

Any ideas ??

Hey Sea,

You don't mention whether you want to get rid of the program entirely or just its icon. If the former is true, uninstall it with the add/remove programs in control panel. As for just removing the icon, go to Taskbar, start menu programs, and delete it there. I would think that it would remove the icon from the desktop as well, but not real sure about it.

Cheers,

But no-one can tell me how to get rid of it now........ http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif

Sea,

Only thing I can think of is to reinstall the program and then delete it in the proper order, icon first, etc..

Think that might work?

Oh, and that sounds like some sort of fluke. I think it has always worked for me that when I uninstalled a program, the icon was automatically removed as well.

It must be some sort of idosyncracy with MSN?

I cant NOT Believe that there is no way to remove a desktop icon w/out reinstalling the offending program !!!

Another example of micro-$haft making SURE they are 'there'!!

Try running the old file manager winfile.exe, navigate to the desktop folder and see if you can delete it. You may need to make sure that View > By File Type [] Show Hidden/System Files is checked. If that doesn't work try nuking it from DOS.

If you want do some serious tweaking or even some heavy duty clean-up ( including removing desktop icons) why not go grab Xsetup from here:

www.xteq.com/ (http://www.xteq.com/)

The specific item you need is under the appearance category. You can get rid most of those pesky icons this way!

The correct plug-in may be in the Christmas pack so grab it also.

Yeah and it can do so much that you would have to dig around all through the registry or \Win directory to find but it is like a chain saw use with caution and you'll be alright but go ahead blindly and you're likely to to lose something important. It has a "safe mode" that shows exactly what changes it wants to make and you can not allow it to proceed at any point in safe mode. Most of the changes can also be undone by unchecking or rechecking the appropriate box. I use it mostly for the apperance and start up control features but it also has great "clear x" commands some of which are extremely difficult to do otherwise (Real Player).
