With my old PC having died I've decided to go for a new PC I'm looking something to last me for a while, so I'm looking at 2.4-2.6ghz Intel quad core, 4gb ram, 1gb graphics card and 2 x sata HD's, 600watt psu, my question is relating to HD video capture,
Is there a special type of Graphics card or video card designed for capturing HD video or will any card be ok, my budget is approx 150pounds/200US, (unless there is something which is worth spending more) should I be using a dedicated card for the job or just use a good gaming type card.
Cheers

*sigh* (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=69420)Alright. I don't know as much about this field as I'd like to but I will do what I can to help you.
First off; Video Capture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_capture) and Video Editing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_editing) are different monkeys on the same tree. If you're doing this with a "family" camcorder HD probably means that what you have is already digital (its saved to a flash memory device like an flash card). In that case, most cameras will either give you a USB or Firewire plugin; I don't think you have to worry about capture there. All you have to do is plug the camcorder into the PC and shoot the data to your hard drive. If not, you will require a card reader that can handle the flash memory card for your camera.
As for the video card, that won't really come into play until the video is on the PC and you're editing the raw. Far as I can tell, a hundred dollar "gaming" card will do you fine. On the other hand, if you are capturing video then...you may need
one of these (http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/decklinkhdextreme/) puppies...and at 1k a pop for one video that just ain't right!
A lot of my info I got from reading this:
