I am working with a friends computer to solve a number of issues, which may all very well be linked to the same problem.

Initially, the problem is that when rebooting Windows normally, we do not get a full load. Windows seems to load properly, and we go through the login screen, but after the wallpaper loads, when normally the icons and taskbar/start menu would appear, nothing happens. We are not locked out, the mouse and keyboard work, we just have nothing on the desktop but wallpaper.
Here is where is gets weird. Hitting CNT+ALT+DEL, then choosing the applications tab and selecting NEW TASK, and selecting the "Shortcut to my desktop.lnk" from the desktop makes everything load. We get an error message reading:

"ERROR: /idlist,:766:2388
Windows cannot find /idlist,:766:2388...."

(the 7 digits seem to change each time) This error can be closed and nothing crashes.

So thats the big problem. In trying to figure out what was causing this, I kept getting an error message telling me that "xnev.exe" has failed, and did i want to send an error report. I couldnt find much online about this program, so I assume it is a virus/trojan of some sort. I am unable to cancel the program from my processes.

I used a full safeboot (through MSCONFIG) to test booting with various things disabled. When I use the /SAFEBOOT option, the computer boots up normally (albeit in safeboot mode) with no problem loading the icons/taskbar.

I can boot up without /SAFEBOOT and tell it not load this xnev.exe as well as a few other things I dont recognize (nudeleze.dll, nemudodi.dll, guyupege.dll) and I still get the problem with the loading, but Im not getting the error messages.

Can someone point me in the right direction. If there is a virus, what do I need to do to get rid of it? Is it something else?

Thanks.

Maybe clean the registry so that it doesn't go looking for those programs during startup?

But first try a boot time scan with whatever antivirus you have or better yet scan it from a different OS (either one on a separate partition or another disk).

You may be able to temporarily solve this by using msconfig again but not to run safeboot but simply to disable all startup programs.

It does sound like malware (many short random letter exe files turn out to be - particularly if google etc have no good hits) and the answer is to stay well clear of registry editors (where did that idea come from!!!) but to start a new thread and post a log in the security section (http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=60009).
