Never even thought of tring bold in the title...LOL...

OK, so what are you trying to get rid of? don't know what ptsnoop is much less how to get rid of it. Only thing I can think of is it reminds me of the Palette Snoop setting in BIOS, but have no idea if it would be the same. Where are you finding a reference to this? Boot up message? Desktop icon? Task Monitor?

I'm clueless...

Well I found out that it is either a virus or a modem driver for a PcTel modem.

Check this out:www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/13515.html (http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/13515.html)

Also check this modem manufacturer site:www.users.zetnet.co.uk/shiva/modem/faq.htm (http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/shiva/modem/faq.htm)
(bottom of the page)

check win.ini for load=ptsnoop.exe and a ptsnoop unistall in add/remove progs in order to complete the removal.

Ok, thanks again to mjc http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Between what I have read and already knew I am of the considered opinion that pcsnoop.exe is a program that 'sits' around waiting for those UNfortunate enough to have an HSP (software) modem.
It is supposed to 'assist' in loading the drivers to the COM port and waits for any application to 'want' the port open so it can help load the drivers needed for the HSP software modem to initiate bla bla bla...
It (pcsnoop.exe) seems to come included in newer pc's that come with the inferior HSP= software modem, and also seems to be included with 'free'.. JUNO, software.
It takes up less than 1MB of ram (at all times) running 'hidin' in the background/

pcsnoop.exe is NOT a trojan !~!~!

IMHO- If you have spent all the $$$ for a nice new system.. ( u have a fast processor, nice ram etc.) For Internet purposes If you have a WinModem/HSPmodem(Host Signal Processing), replace it!! .. with a DSP( Digital Signal Processing ) hardware modem.
ANd to go further... if you REALLY want speed on a FAST machine on the Internet...get DSL or Cable modem, Broadband is where you really see how Fast your pc is on things http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
It was an Extremely POOR choice of names for this particular program as it leeds people to think that it is a '~SPY~' program sending and recieving valuable "Secret Data" about you.. LOL.. NOT!!

Sea69,

Not only does it seem to be a poor choice of names but it seems that it is not a modem dependant program because some adware/spyware does indeed put it on your system. (to make sure your modem drivers are loade to call the add server?). Not all HSP modem driver builds use it. Most Rockwell/Conexant chipset modems can use each others drivers, PCTel, ESS, Lucent and several others have reference drivers that I believe don't include it. So what if takes less than 1 MB RAM how much User and GDI does it use? Check system properties -> performance with it running crtl-alt-del end it and check again. OF course a good hardware modem has no need of such a program and it is just a waste of space. Most of the research I did on it seems to indicate that most software modems don'need it either and that it can be a very serious resource hog. (why have two or more programs checking for whether or not your modem is loaded and ready to use (DUN checks so do most browsers). It also seems to me that it could also be a source of some of the "modem/port in use" issues with soft modems. It seems to also have only one legitamate use: load the modem in a direct connection to a certain location that doesn't use a web address (certain online banking) or a browser to connect.

How

I am not sure if this is resolved or not yet. You obviously now know what it is and ppl have said how to remove it.

Look in the wiw.ini file under run and load.
Search the registry for it and remove it from the run services sections.

Also while the file itself is not supposed to be a virus, if you do not have a winmodem i would be suspicious. Espically if you are continually removing it the proper way. I wouldnt hesitate to suggest scanning it. Laters...

My adsl is up 96% of the time but for a back up I was using juno
I didnt like them anyway http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
