fixed. Must have been something with the registry because after I ran Regcure
the problem went away.

1. Best thing to do to undo/recover problems such as as this, or ANY software problem.
e.g. If Windows will no longer boot!
Or whatever.

(a) Move all [almost] data files off the Windows partition [C:?] to one or more other partitions.

(b) Make backups at sensible points [of partition contents, Windows in particular] as you move forward in time making changes to software and/or hardware.

(c)Image backups are good for keeping historic snapshots of the way things were at various points in time.

(d) The FREE version of SyncBack is good for making/restoring copies of the very latest folder/file contents of various Windows partitions [not Linux].

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(e) My latest method of doing (b), (c), and (d) is to use a puplet of Puppy Linux [i.e. BoxPup] as the OS environment within which to run various programs to do the work as follows:

(f) Run the FREE SyncBack under WINE to backup to [and restore from] a folder on a partition in an external USB HDD.

(g) Run "X File Explorer" [Xfe] with its dual panes to copy/restore the contents of any partition [Windows or Linux].
If you [use this or SyncBack, or any other to] copy, delete the original contents, then restore...
The restored contents will be PERFECTLY DEFRAGMENTED as a by-product.

(h) Use the included "Puppy Universal dd" [Pudd] to make compressed image backup files [.img.gz] files and save those on an external USB HDD.
