is there a way to modify a creative4224 to be a 8424? or add more ram buffer?

Firmware updates can (and often do) improve performance. But: Even if they could, no manufacturer is going to let you gain so much more performance (for free) that you are discouraged from upgrading to the next higher product in their line.

P.S.: I've never heard of a drive that lets you upgrade its onboard buffer.
