What are the specs of the 1 GB RAM?

Ok forget that question. Does it start at all with just the 512 -are there any beeps or anything? Does the RAM work on another machine?

The answers are in the Link and other text written in the OP.

Where did you get the 512 from and which mobo or pc are you installing this on?

Make sure you unplug the system from the wall, and leave the battery out for a minimum of ten minutes. I usually also hit the power button a couple of times in order to help drain any stored up power in the capacitors.

why 10minutes?
To allow enough time for the CMOS to discharge and clear. If the CMOS didn't reset in 2 minutes then obviously it wasn't enough time for it to discharge. :)

but i hawe to keep pc unpluged when the battery is out, right?

There must be no power capable of refreshing the CMOS chip while it discharges over a significant number of minutes (or immediately if there is a CMOS jumper) so yes - no mains power from the wall and no CMOS battery on the mobo (and on a laptop the main battery pack should be the first thing removed).

Which is why I told him to forget the question.
What I want to know is whether or not the 512 MB RAM works on a different machine. It could simply be a case of bad RAM.

I know I'm nit-picking but even on reflection you still haven't seen what I did.

Does it start?Ok forget that question. Does it start at all with just the 512

From the OP: no it doesn't start. If i leave only the 512mb of ram it doesnt start also.

I repeat--AT ALL...are there any beeps or anything?

Starting can mean anything from windows booting to the PC fans starting. I wanted to clarify what he meant, since he clearly implies English isn't his first language.

I have no desire to argue at all but if you post or reply with incorrect or imprecise statements don't be surprised if they get corrected. There are forums elsewhere where this would almost immediately result in flaming. Other peeps may not always have the best of English but I increasingly/repeatedly get the impression of threads/posts not being read carefully enough and replies made too quickly (without enough forethought probably) and also too often with simple replication of what others have already responded with. Your enthusiasm to post and help is commendable and will be supported but it can get irritating if such advice is not apposite or correct and that will result in lectures from me or other moderators.

It appears that the 1 gig stick worked until the 512 meg one was installed beside it. Then a CMOS clear was tried after admitting some overclocking.

Does it still boot with the 1 gig module? I don't care what the specs are as long as it works, beeps, glows, keeps the beat by tapping it's foot, or swaying to and fro... :p

Maybe we can put something under the post counts as a hint to 'askers' as to how much to rely on noob answers with. But then that would not be courteous nor nice etc.

Quick responses are driven for a myriad of reasons. My favorites are ones that increase fact findings wether or not they actually solve anything, I do it to help increase the detail for what one of our more knowledgeable members are going to ask for anyway. There are s-o-o-o many posters who don't know what to post in order to receive quick or accurate assistance, I ask for more system specs. In the reply there are sometimes a clue of events which can lead to another path. Keeping the thread active AND replying soon help with a solution IMO. Esp, with the impatient kind..

I completely agree with your comments FTT. And it is much better to ask for specific unambiguous clarification than guess at what a poster meant or implied; wrong inferences are far too easily made. There are, of course, both courteous and rude ways of responding when people's use of English or spelling is bad or when someone is an apparent newbie. There is also a difference between responding with alacrity, as you have suggested, and of responding without "significant forethought". It is all to easy to be ambiguous ourselves and most of us have been misunderstood at some point in time; I don't exclude myself.

The 512 stick is either bad or inappropriate just as nuz had inferred. For the future, always try to give as full an account of what has happened as well as posting the specifications about all relevant hardware.

Your 512 stick is DEAD! We can only say it in so many ways...

Return it if you can, or toss it out. What else do you want us to advise? It's not repairable and you can't even boot up enough to run Memtest on it so it is a hopeless cause.

The only other possibility is that it will not work with your motherboard because your mobo is fussy like some ASUS boards. In either case, you need to return it or just stop trying to use it.
