Windows 7 is supposed to be a good OS. But MS for whatever reason left out Windows Mail. To replace it I downloaded Thunderbird which is probably better than Windows Mail or Outlook Express. The only problem I had was when I imported my contacts that I had backed up from Windows Mail. It imported them OK, but it didn't show the names for each contact--just an icon for each. Sometime ago I decided to use Thunderbird but had the same problem, so I went back to Windows Mail. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Does anyone know how to import the contacts and have the name along with them?

Doesn't Thunderbird automatically transfer your data?

An interesting aside:

Good be with ye = good be wi' ye = goodbye. :)

I just really wonder what has been happening. Even if no name (first name, lastname, nickname, etc) is imported I have found Thunderbird will use the name part (before the @ sign) as the name to display in the name column.

Are the icons little envelopes as in the attached pic. The pic shows the name to be xyz because xyz@example.com is the only entry for that contact. The only other thing I can think of is that the name column is so narrow that the name itself has been excluded. Does anything appear if you maximise the Address Book.

Since you are using a backup file or folder I guess there can be no automatic import but I wonder in what format the backup is in. It may be too late now but exporting address books as CSV files and then importing from CSV can give one much more explicit control.

Yes, they will transfer Outlook Express but there is no option for Windows mail. I chose another option (don't remember what it was). And it transfered but not with the names. Paul asked if one would maximize the size of the column would that help. I tried it but it did not help. I'm going to try again and see if I can fix it. I did type out all of my contacts and printed it, so if I can't get it right, I'll just retype them.
