I have two desktops that have been running on a G wirless router. I just went out and bought an N wireless router, the D-Link DIR-655 (Xtreme N Gigabit Router). The computers are like 5-6 years old so my question is will the new wireless device just work or do i have to buy those little $100 plug-ins to get this bad boy up and running?

Thanks

I would double-check with the provider of the router but I believe it should have backward compatibility (http://www.networkworld.com/newsletters/wireless/2006/0206wireless1.html?fsrc=rss-wireless) - though obviously with reduced functionality.

It may also be that n signals can interfere with nearby g ones but I'm not at all sure of the implications or whether that is a fact.

If the N router is using 2.4 ghz I would just make sure the channels are separated between the two routers wireless transmitter, say channel 1 and 11 respectively. If th N router is running at 5Ghz there is no problem. Different frequency, no overlap. Of course your computers need new 5Ghz cards/dongle/etc.

Of course your computers need new 5Ghz cards/dongle/etc.Is that a necessity or a requirement only if you want the full capability?

Only if your using 5Ghz band. To transmit and receive on the new frequency, both sides (router,PC) must be able to receive and transmit 5Ghz. So unless you bought a 2.4 AND 5Ghz expansion card/dongle you are going to need a new one to use 5Ghz.

If you just use 2.4ghz your fine, just make sure both radios/wireless routers are set to separate channels.
