I flashed my Bios but the boot up page and Sandra still tell me that my Bios date is 1995 and needs to be updated. However the Amibios Setup Page tells the correct new version and date. What do I do now?

If the date shown when you enter the BIOS indicates the new updated version, I wouldn't worry about it, the date on the boot screen may be a standard date shown regardless of updates. I would think it should show the updated version and date, but maybe not. Check the BIOS version number on the boot up screen, and in BIOS. Is it the old one or the new?
If it shows the new one, it can only do that if the new one is installed. If it was not installed properly, I seriously doubt if the machine would boot at all. If it boots now and works, and shows the correct BIOS date, at least while in BIOS, I'd think it was OK, and press on.

If you're running win 98 you can look in System Information and check it. Go to Start\Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Information after the system info window opens, click the plus (+) beside Components and scroll down to System and click it. In the right pane it will post system info. Scroll down to System Board and you should see the BIOS manufacturer, version and date.

Hey Pete
To further confuse me. System Information shows the following:
Bios date as 7/15/95
CPU is Pentium (I have AMD K62 550)
Driver Date 4/23/99 (I guess it's a miracle that it's even running!)

So even though the Amibois page acknowlegedes the new Bios the system does not. Why is my CPU shown as a Pentium? Did this board prehaps come installed with the Bios for a Pentium CPU? The download site only shows the AMD bios for this board. Pete please help me. I know I'm not getting the performance I should be getting. It's too slow when I run the CPU benchmark test it only shows my CPU to be operating at best 19.

I have the following system:
PCChips PC100 Socket 7 M599LMR System Board
18.7gig 7,200RPM Western Digital Hard Drive
AMD K62 550 CPU
Windows 98SE - Fat 32

All the other components are integrated into the board. This system is only a month and half old. I have been tryng (Since day 1) to get support from the manufacturer, PC Chips, and they will not answer. The company that sells the systems, Everin America, only would point me to where my bios update would be located. Even though I have sent them two additional emails.

I just don't know what to do. The system was sold as barebones computer you add CPU, Memory, and Hard Drive. It was a gift from my Dad. I would rather fix it myself and not even tell him. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

If it's only 1 1/2 months old, it should still be under warranty. I would take it back and bug them to death until they fix or replace it. Don't take no for an answer, take a sleeping bag if you have to and tell them they'll be talking to you every morning until it's fixed. Ask if they have a spare couch...and a coffee pot...It's new and under warranty, if they don't honor their warranty, contact the state's Attorney General's Office, Consumer Affairs Dept., Better Business Bureau, and Chamber of Commerce, and a call to the District Attorney's office might even be necessary to get results.

No responsible tech support department would tell a novice to flash the BIOS in the first place. That's something even advanced techs hesitate to do, and only do it if it's absolutely necessary.

Also check my site below, look for the top link, Trish's, and go to the Motherboard/BIOS section. There's a link there about PC Chips boards that may interest you.

Even though it was a gift from your father, I would recommend also talking to him, explaining the situation, and maybe you two can get together on getting the company to fix or replace the thing. If it came out of the box in need of a BIOS update, it was an obvious attempt to grab maximum dollars for minimum product in the first place, I'd be raising someone's roof.

I'm not sure what the CPU should be listed as, I've never used AMD's, I've always had Intels in my systems. Mine just says Pentium in the components section, but if you look at the first screen in system info, mine says "Genuine Intel with MMX technology". Check yours, it might list the proper CPU in the first screen when System Information opens.

Take it back and raise hell!
