My PC has just started to crash repeatedly, sometimes I get a message box saying 'this program has performed an illegal operation and will be closed down' other times I get a blue screen with the message 'a fatal exeption has occurred' Details show. 'F.AGENT executed an invalid instruction in module AUPDATE.DLL at 0137:0045df40 '
I can't limit it to a particular program it seems to happen whatever program is running.
I am running W95.
Help!!!!!!!

hi,
Did u install something called "Free Agent"??.. a news and mail reader ??
If so this may have an auto update feature that is trying to "call home".......

The only thing that I have installed recently is 'Web site traffic builder' a web site submission program, this was about a week before the PC started crashing.

That is the #1 thing I would check !
as well as run a virus scan, u can get a free up to date online scan @ pcpitstop (http://www.pcpitstop.com/)

Many thanks, I have uninstalled the web program (plus a few others that I hadn't got around to and the problem hasn't recurred yet. I've also visited pitstop, which found a few minor problems which I have corrected, I've also added the site to my favourites for future use.
Regards, Vic.

If you think it may be your processor failing, go to "start", "settings", "control panel", "system", "performance", "file system", and slide the read "ahead optimizer" to none. Try that for a while and if it is a lot better it could be your processor.

Well my score was -8 but what that means I don't know. Basically the system got Winner Flags on all the performance reports, with a few niggles like 'name the hard drive' & 'reset security settings' which I've done.
Advice was to add more memory, and I've just posted a question on the forum as I've seen some advertised.
By the way how did you come by your handle ? are you a fellow sailor ? & thanks for your input.
