View Full Version : Xcopy from hard disk to CD
Hi,
I attempted to use the xcopy command and was not able copy all files within a directory from my hard drive to a rewritable CD. Any helps are appreciated.

Unless I'm badly mistaken, the xcopy command will not work for burning CD's, you have to use specfic software for that. Xcopy works only for copying files to a hard drive or floppy.
If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will be along soon to correct me...

Using a re-writable CD drive & disk, all Windows applications (including Windows Explorer) can write directly to the disk, but I'm not sure about DOS applications. Doesn't xcopy have some inherent limitations? For example, I recall reading about problems using xcopy when attempting to copy all files to upgrade to a new harddrive....

HELLO BL,
I AM ONLY NEW TO THE DISCUSSION FORUM, HOWEVER I AM NOT NEW TO COMPUTERS OR USING CDROMS AND WRITERS, ANYAY AS SLEDDOG SAID HE IS RIGHT IN A WAY,THAT ALL WINDOWS APPS CAN WRITE TO YOUR DISK, HOWEVER THEY CAN NOT WRITE TO YOUR DISK INDEPENDANDLY AND WILL ONLY WRITE TO A RE-WRITABLE DISK THROUGH A PROCESS CALLED DIRECT-CD. THIS SHOULD HAVE COME WITH YOUR CD-WRITER SOFTWARE. DIRECT-CD IS THE APPLICATION THAT ALLOWS YOU TO COPY THINGS TO YOUR RE-WRITABLE DISKS JUST LIKE COPYING FILES TO YOUR HARDDRIVE OR FLOPPY. WHEN USING A DATA DISK OR PLAIN ONCE ONLY WRITABLE DISK THESE MUST BE ACCESSED THROUGH SPECIAL PROGRAMS LIKE NERO CD-BURNING AND ADAPTEC CD PROGRAMS.... SO YES THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION IS YOU CAN NOT USE XCOPY TO TRANSFER OR STORE FILES TO YOUR DISKS IN A CD-WRITER, BECAUSE THEY USE SPECIFIC TECHNOLOGY AND PROGRAMS FOR WRITING.
HOPE THIS HELPS, LOOK FORWARD TO CATCHING YA ALL AROUND.

Thank you for all the responses.
Since xcopy is unreliable, I decide not to use it anymore. I like to know are there any alternative commands or products that I should use. What products that supports Windows NT are simple and reliable?

I use Adaptec Easy CD Creator on NT4.
What is it precisely that you're trying to do?
