View Full Version : Trouble with Heatsink Clips?

Ever had troubles getting a heatsink's clip on or off? I sure have. In the past, I've used a long plastic "pot" (potentiometer) trimmer (tweaker) as an aid.
Think I'll try a chopstick next time: http://www.gamingin3d.com/reviews/chopstix/chopsticks.shtml
(I found the link in Sysopt.com News.)

A fair sized plastic knitting needle might work well too, and you have no idea how many times I've grabbed up the trusty old hemostats...I also keep a couple of small screwdrivers close by, they work well for more than turning screws...just be careful around IC chips...

A search for "clip art" on any good search engine will turn up tons of links to free clip art, and many of the sites have animated gifs as well. I try to use them sparingly, since it was requested that I do so when I first joined the forums, it seems some folks don't like waiting for them to load. But every now and then, a picture speaks louder than the printed word...
To use them here you have to upload them to a web server such as Zing (http://www.zing.com) and use the UBB code for images to link to them. Try to edit my previous post and you'll see how the link is created, you won't be able to edit the post, but you can look at the way the link is created. A page with a bunch of neat smilies is also Here (http://www.geocities.com/him_voxdei/smile.htm).

lol...
Close but no bananna, you'll very rarely find me with a beer mug in my hand...but it was a nice try...
OK, gotta say it, try and use the gifs sparingly, Charles emailed me early in my days with the forums and asked me to go easy on the animations, since some people will complain that they take too long to load. That's why you don't see a standard "signature gif" on every post I make. I have a bunch that I used previously on another forum where it's not only accepted, but usually pretty well liked.
Here though, I try to use them very sparingly, so folks won't have to wait long for the pages to load. Mainly when a picture will speak louder than 3 paragraphs...or get a good laugh... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Not trying to make anyone jealous, but I've had cable access for only two months and I already take it for granted. (Thank you, AT&T@home!)
Well all this talk of animated gifs and slow loading and cable access (here in the wilds of WV my local cable company says cable what ???? and forget DSL) we kind of forgot one thing plastic knitting needles can carry a static charge so be very careful with them around a CPU or any electronics. My favorite item for small parts is either a pair of tiny locking pliers or hemostats.

PS I find that by the time the banner ads are done loading the animated gifs are too.

Correct you are mjc, and I forgot about that. The outside of static free component bags can hold a static charge too. I'll stick to my trusty hemostats...and they double as...never mind...
