Hi Tech Masters. I'm trying to download Quicktime, but it's not letting me to. I have windows 2000 and a T1 line and it's a Network Computer at work. It says I have to change the settings or something.
Anybody know how to bypass it so I can download Quicktime?
Also why do some websites insist on using Quicktime, I find Media Player is much better? Thank you.

How to "get around" the problem sounds like something you should ask your System Administrator about, we're not here to help people bypass built in network security issues. If your SA says it can't be done, you'll have to live without Quicktime.
In answer to the other question, why do some websites use it instead? Because certain video formats are only supported by Quicktime, and not Media Player.

Hey Alba,
I second Pete's notion. You will have to ask your System Administrator because it sounds like you don't have administrator privileges on your computer.
I have admin privileges on my WIN NT 4.0 Workstation here at work. It's a good thing, too, since our sys administrator decided he would rather work somewhere else!

Boy do I feel embarrass, I'm very new to Computers and didn't know it was a
security issue. All I wanted to do was to download the Movie Player, it let me download Real Player so I didn't know why it didn't let me do Quicktime. Sorry if I sounded like I was planning to do something bad.
I thought it was because it was by "Apple" that's why the settings didn't let me do it because this was Windows 2000. I thought if I change the settings to match a Apple Computer so it'll work.. Sorry if I sounded like a bad guy.. I'm just very new to puters..

No problem, you learn by asking questions.
Being by Apple is not the reason it won't download, it's either a problem with the download site, or a local network security issue. I have downloaded Quicktime on my machine before, but it's not on a network. It downloads, installs and works fine so it's nothing to do with being by Apple.
I stay away from Real Player due to the possibility of it being "spyware". Real Networks, the producers of Real Player also released a download utility that sends a notice back to Real Networks with detailed information about every file you download. I don't know if Real Player does the same, but decided not to chance it.

Wow, thanks for the tip, Paleo Pete. I know many other people will thank you too! What about Pkware or Winzip, do they also see the information you are downloading? Thanks again! Is Windows Media Player safe, I hope? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

I have Real Player, ( I didnt allow the 'agent' that calls home to be installed) u have a choice. Believe it or not there are some formats that require it. (Real Player) that is..meaning that some 'streaming' downloads need ReaPlayer format...otherwise I dont use Real at all.
Actually Quicktime is superior in both video and sound quality over real, and Media player.
I do not use pkware but winzip does not 'call home' on my pc ..... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

I don't think PK zip or winzip "call home". Not that I know of anyway, and nothing about either one is mentioned on the Gibson Research page.
Sea is correct, some formats will not work on anything but Real Player, so I just live without them. Real Player itself was not covered in the article I read concerning spyware, but since it's produced by Real Networks, I consider it suspect. They added the call home feature to their download accelerator, same as Netscape did, I figure they're very likely to add it to everything they produce, so I don't use anything that has Real Network's name on it. Or Netscape...

What do these companies do with this information anyway? What is Real going to do with the info they stea.... I mean obtain from us anyway? Will they use the information as a individual base or as a group? To make it clear, do they want information from Bob Smith or from Age Groups of Males from Certain Areas...etc....

The Gibson Research Corporation (http://grc.com/default.htm) homepage can explain it much better than I can.

What does any marketing group want woth information about you?
They want to be able to send you "offers" and such, see what your interested in and tailor those "offers" to those interests and then make money off of selling that info to the highest bidder. (offers=junk mail)
Its not just on the internet it is everywhere. Have you ever noticed that if your name gets mis-spelled on one magazine subscription you'll get tons of junk mail with that same mis-spelling?
Its not just here on the 'net that they can gather it without your knowledge, ever pay with a credit card anywhere?
It's just here they can make your computer do alot of the the work for them and besides "spyware" makes your connection to the internet slower. (Try this for yourself: set up system monitor to monitor dial-up adapter->bytes received and try to both download and upload something at the same time and look at you download speed). "Spyware" calling home is just constantly uploading info to some marketing firms server.

And if you're concerned about a program sending out info or just security in general, you might want to consider a firewall...black ice is good, but so is zone alarm and it's free...
And quicktime might be great in quality, but it certainly leaves alot to be desired in file size...

about that..........
with quicktime it isnt (at least when I have used it) a 'streaming' file like win media, realplayer, etc. It ( the file) is the same size. The difference is that w/ quicktime u dont see it as it downloads , u download and save the entire file for viewing whenever u want to. (as opposed to streaming..viewing live from the download site) The actuall files are the same size its just a matter of how the file is handled on ur pc http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
*also- quicktime includes sound that does make the file LARGER*
