I have recently attempted to install a Geforce 2 MX in my desktop. The first issue I need to find out in order to try and fix the problems (system crash) is what type of mother board and issue of BIOS I am using.

I beleive that there is freeware out there that will tell you everything about your computer configurations. does anyone know of it.?, or how I can find out.

WinTune (http://wintune.winmag.com/) is also a good utility for finding out system info and tuning it up, Click Cancel for the auto download popup, so you can read the webpage first. You can download wintune later if you want to. That's the only thing I don't like about their website, I would think you could check into it first...but you can say no then still get it later anyway...

Phoenix (http://www.ptltd.com/platform/flash.html) has a Phoenix BIOS ID utility, they recently acquired Award, and so far I haven't found the Award utility, but I'm still looking.

OK, finally found it, or something similar, tucked away in a dark corner somewhere...Unicore (http://www.unicore.com/biosupgrades/upgradenow.cfm) has a BIOS Wizard that will give yo your BIOS ID string. Read the webpage first. Their business is selling BIOS Upgrades.

AMI (http://www.ami.com/support/mbid.html) on the other hand, has their own motherboard ID utility.

You can find out what brand BIOS your machine uses if it will boot as far as the first screen, it will have Award, Phoenix or AMI shown in the top left corner of the screen, usually with the BIOS ID string. Write that number doen and you can use it to identify the motherboard. The [Pause] key will hold the screen there as long as you need, any key will resume booting.

Wim's BIOS (http://www.ping.be/bios/) is the best place to start looking for motherboard ID once you have the BIOS ID string.
