I know this is a hardware thread, but it's the best I could find. :D

I have a movie that's in full 1080p stored on my hard drive. It's an 8GB, .mkv file encoded with x264.
I was wondering what the best way to encode this movie to fit on a DVD with the least loss in quality. It's ripped from a blu-ray disc, so I know there's no way to keep the full resolution and quality, but just want to know what the best option would be.

Thanks!

Hello,

You should try a DVD authoring tool such as Nero Vision or DVD Santa. The applications automatically re size the video/audio quality to fit to dvd. The dvd should be very watchable and close to dvd quality.
Good luck, try it out.
