Trying to write a how to guide. trying to figure out what i need to do to include the screen shot of the programs front end.
instead of just inserting the text " click on font size " also have a screen shot of the font size button.
realize this is not a hardware problem but thought it came closer to a
" how do I " then a software problem.
Thanks to all, for all the help in the past and in the future
Brian
You can press the print Screen Button and send the screen shot to the clip Board.
Then you can edit the screen shot with a simple paste into an editor and save it to the format you want.
You can also save the clipboard views using Clipboard Viewer and reopen them later to trim out any unwanted areas of the screen.
Saves the hassle of doing the paste to an editor program while working on the guide.
The last Clip in memory will be replaced each time you tap the print screen button.
You may need to install the Clipboard Viewer . By Default it's not installed by Win98.( It is included on the cd)
Another nice thing about the viewer.
You can keep it running in the background and use it to View the Clip .
Allowing you to see what you are getting and Redo it at that time.
It updates itself with each new clip

Just like Rick stated you should install Clipboard viewer form the W98 (SE) CD. After doing this you should be able to make a screen shot of an active screen by pressing <ALT+PRNTSCRN>.
Then open the application you want to insert the screen dump, rightclick youre mouse in the are where you want to place the dump and then presss <PASTE>

Hi !!
You want to make ur "PrtScrn/sysRq" button do something.. without.. all the excess paste, cut back and forth lalala.. I found a VERY simple app called "PrintScreen2000, that is free, small, unobtrusive, and it will "take a picture" hassle free of anything that is currently displayed on your monitor. You can save this to anyplace u like and instantly send it via email or file transfer(icq-type or other). or add the saved 'picture' to any web-page or document u r creating http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
If u want this (I cant recall where I got it) I would be happy to send it to u via email or icq.. feel free to contact me.

You can also run a search for "screenshots" on nay good search engine, several good capture programs are out there that are freeware or shareware, one is called Grab It Pro, I've used it and it works very well.
SimTel (http://www.simtel.net/simtel.net/) probably has something worth checking out, tons of great downloads there, Freeware Home (http://www.freewarehome.com/) is another very good place to look. completely Free Software (http://www.completelyfreesoftware.com/index_all.html) might also have something. I hate posting links to sites with sound, but this one has a button to stop the song...

Here's my choice for best screenshot program...SnagIt.
You can download it from www.techsmith.com. (http://www.techsmith.com.) You define
a region of interest ("crop") with the mouse and SnagIt
will capture it. It also has an accompanying SnagIt Studio,
which allows you to edit the captured image.

If your howto guide is going to be online, save your screenshots as .gif files instead of .jpg's. Without going into details (which I don't really know http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif ) these file formats use very different compression formats. Gif is a lossless compression, jpg is lossy -- and for screenshots this is *very* noticeable. The gif format is best suited for images with large areas of solid colour, and text (e.g., screenshots).
