View Full Version : Hard drive making terrible noise
i have a micron transport xke, laptop, 1997 model. The hard drive is screaming at me. The loud noise comes and goes sometimes it is so bad I have to shut down. I think my hard drive is dieing. Question is what can I do, I don't want to ship this off to Micron their fees start at $150.00. Do I need a new drive? Can I fix this one? Can I just attach a new drive and make this one obsolete? Thanks

Whenever a hard drive starts making loud noises it ain't good. Your best bet is to start looking to replace it. There are lots of external addon hard drives that connect via a PCMCIA card and depending on your BIOS you may or may not be able to boot from them.
Maybe someone else will have first hand knowledge of your Micron model and can tell you if replacing the internal drive is a cheap alternative.
But in my experience laptop repair is best left to those who done it before.

I agree, sounds like the hard drive is on its way out, and laptops are very difficult to get into. Once you get into the case it's not much different from a desktop, but getting inside the thing can be very trying.
I would go with scada's suggestion to look for an external drive, or if the machine is still under warranty, ship it off to be repaired. You might also check around to see if you can find an authorized repair center locally, you might get lucky.
