For me its a three-way-tie, windows 2000, windows 7, windows 98se(after some tweaking and updates.

My least favorite is 1.0, 2.0, and Windows ME

Linux. ;)

For playing games I have had no issues with vista. Though by all accounts 7 is better. I am running it in a virtual machine from within Linux, but only to connect to my companies website so I don't really have a feel for it. What's funny about saving the state of the vm is when you load it back up it thinks it is still the same date and time it was when you saved it. Hmm, that could be useful when the beta runs out... :D

I haven't booted to XP for several months. Actually thinking about it, I'm not sure I have even booted to it at all this year! Heck, I might as well free up some hard drive space. :p No, there are a couple games that won't run in vista that I will eventually get back around to playing again.

I've fallen in love with Windows 7... I also like using XP, or ubuntu, I may dive into Vista for gaming, but aside from Knights of the Old Republic, I've no problem what so ever with windows 7.

Why do you like 2000, Phil?

I like Win98SE because it is fairly easy to manipulate and works good on old PCs from the dump. WinXP is best for doing somewhat useful things on though

2000 is mostly Xp without the slight bloat. Plus most software and drivers are backwards compatible.

Except for gaming, a good Linux distro is the best and most bang for the buck. I prefer Suse.

I generally have hated windoze of all flavors, but I've mellowed some with age. Everything before W2000 was garbage and just steps in the MS evolutionary process. W2000 was stable, reliable, functional, and you never had to activate it. ME is the OS that never should have been...at all. XP...became...acceptable. Although it's still a cesspool with a bullseye on its back. Vista, for all that may have been good about it, was a disaster. Notice I'm speaking in the past tense. I can't vote for W7, maybe two years after it's released, we'll see. However, the RC looks great (the desktop has kind of a KDE (Linux)) feel to it, it has been amazingly stable for an RC, and figuring out how to do what you need to is pretty darned intuitive...kind of "Mac-like". I was not the first to say that, some Mac fanboys on other forums did. I think that's cool. Competition is the engine that drives innovation. :D

I remember playing games on windows 3.1 ... (yes, though I am young, I was around back then...) the only time I remember it crashing was when I had about 10 games on it... I guess it doesn't help justify it's cause because my dad was/is a good programmer, who lived with-in the windows and linux enviroments at the time and as such, the right patches and drivers and such were installed and were properly kept in good working condition, probably behind the scenes.

I patched my windows 98 SE more than My Win2k or my Windows 7. I got a lot most of the from Mdgx.com. One of them added USB Flash drive support. It has a Cd burner, but mainly use my Acer for that
purpose.

I also download an NT compatibility layers. It allows me to use to use Firefox 3 on 98(I Tested It). It also increases the speed of the OS. Plus it doesn't lose any dos computability.

In some ways it's ideal for dos gaming. It has a dos compatible. A large enough hard drive to hold many dos games. The only problem is that some games move too fast. That's due to the fact a Pentium 3 is a much faster processor than a 386

For me. it's a question of which Puppy Linux is best?

The latest Puppy Linux 4.2.1 has some nice new features. yet has some tiny imperfections that make it less than "polished".
Working from there now, loaded from a 1GB Flash Drive..

Muppy Linux 008.4c seems like it was made by someone [Mark Ulrich] who really knew what they were doing.
Lots of goodies included, and nice additional touches.

BoxPup 4.1.3 is beautifully finished.
Elegant, stylish, minimalist, FAST.
The Puppy I use most.

TeenPup 2009 is something I'd really like to try, but because its maker decided to continue building upon an earlier Puppy version, it won't work with my PCI to IDE SCSI RAID controller card.
So I'll just have to wait until September when an updated version will be released.

Having invested a lot of time and effort into Win2000Pro, I keep that as backup for various programs I've installed.
All my old emails and family tree are in there.

If anybody doesn't believe me about running Firefox 3.5 on 98 SE I'll post a Screen shot. It is all thanks to the NT compatibility layer I downloaded. Its still a beta, but I didn't have any problems, In fact after I installed that It sped up The Os by a good amount. I'm pretty sure it also works for Windows ME.

Phil, where is this NT compatibility layer? it sounds interesting. Also, I found a generic USB mass storage device driver for win98SE and it works great. apparently it works for ipods, psps, etc but I got it to use with flash drives, because I had a couple new ones that Win98 didn't like.

You can get it here at http://sourceforge.net/projects/kernelex/.

I tweaked my 98se recently. I added 64 MB more ram and swapped the Cd burner for a DVD Rom. It lost it's burning capabilities, but it can now run DVDs. The burning thing isn't an issue since my Acer can burn DVDs and it has light scribe. The NT compatibility layer is still an alpha, but it works for somethings

I;ve tried the Kernel EX thing on my 98SE and Firefox didn;t display some things correctly... it was also a little unstable. For now, I'll stick with the only modification I've done to my installs: 98SE SP1 http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html

Stable as a rock, both installs.

I gave up on upgrading the hp pavilion after it rejected the Ati Diablotek Graphics card and the 28 GB HD I tried Failed to work. It's 700mhz Coppermine Celeron's 66mhz front bus causes a performance bottle neck.

I put the ram upgrade and Diablotek Graphics card I ordered for the Hp into my 98se. It Now has 640 MB Ram. The only reason that worked was that I tweaked the system.ini file. I also put The Original HD from the HP Pavillion and added it to my 98SE.

Just as a final note my My two working computers and my Sister's Gateway Have Ati Graphics cards. Her computer has a 2.6ghz P4

I got a better legacy PC to use 98SE on. It only has one problem it's sound card is incompatible with with windows 98. Thats why i ordered a sound blaster 128.

what can i use windows NT 4.0 for if my 98se has native Usb support
