How can I recognize EDO ram modules?

That's a difficult one. If you know the brand, the manufacturer's website may have an ID page that you can use, by looking up the part numbers.

In some cases, you can install the RAM, boot the computer to the 3rd screen, with the rectangular info box, and press [Pause] and that will stop the booot process. In that info box the RAM type is sometimes listed. Mine says I'm using Fast Page Mode...Any other key will resume the boot process, and you can shut the computer down at this point also, without doing any harm to it. I avoid using the [Enter] key, since that one tells the computer to activate any command I may have typed. Good way to make a mistake, so I stay away from it.

Another way is to download SiSoft's Sandra 2001 Standard, unzip and install it. (It's free)

It will tell you everything you need to know about your mainboard, including how much, what kind and what speed of RAM your board will support. It will also tell you what kind and what speed of RAM you currently have in the machine.

Do a search on "Sandra 2001 Standard". There are numerous download sites so rather than listing one here that may be slower than the rest, you can find it for yourself.

Sandra is excellent diagnostic/informational software. I wouldn't leave home without it.
