OK here is a link that will explain quite a bit to you. http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/readme/Win98se/w98sesetuptxt.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0#GENERAL
If you have access to a Win 98 computer and if you've got the Win 98 disc use a friends pc that has Win 98 and go into the Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/StartUp Disk there you will able to use the disc to create a startup disk. By using the Win 98 startup disk you will get the cdrom (generic) drivers that you need for CD ROM support. http://www.techtv.com/callforhelp/projects/story/0,23008,2107228,00.html
I just did this and I had copied down a couple of real good walkthroughs (and even printed them out-but I'm at work now and don't have access to them) now I can't remember the URL's One was from http://www.techtv.com/callforhelp/projects/jump/0,23009,2217113,00.html
That's the one...it should square you away. Let us know if you have any troubles.

Hello,

Go to www.bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com) where you'll be able to d/l a startup disk with cd rom support. You might also want to check out www.maximumpc.com/reprint/clean_start/index.html (http://www.maximumpc.com/reprint/clean_start/index.html) It is a descent atrical on how to setup win98. Also the PCGuide has some other good articals on partitioning and setup. Hope this helps.

A couple more links that have good info along those lines:
the PC Guide's Hard Disk Partitioning and Formatting Procedure (http://www.pcguide.com/proc/setup/hdd-c.html)
Quick Guide to a win98 Fresh Start (http://www.hardwarehell.com/fdisk.htm)

If you haven't done so already, format the drive before trying to reinstall Windows. Fdisk should not be necessary unless you need to change from FAT 16 to FAT 32. You can run fdisk and check to see which is the current setup by choosing option 4, "View Partition Information", and exit fdisk without making any changes.

I always prefer to copy the install files to a folder on the hard drive rather than install directly from the CD, any time you need to install drivers or components later, you don't have to dig out the CD again, Windows looks in the folder it was installed from. This is also supposed to install faster, but I can't verify that.

If this shows up twice it's a server glitch and I'll delete the duplicate later.

Q195750 (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q195/7/50.ASP) might have some info pertaining to the problem you're having with setup hanging.

Please keep this problem in THIS topic instead of posting another one. Use the "Post Reply" button below the posts.
