sounds like you have some sort of corruption between the two players. maybe if you uninstall realplayer it might fix it. see if that works, then later on put realplayer back on. or better yet download vlc player, it's a free program. hope this helps...

1. There are 3 methods that can be used to open a file with a program, as follows:

(a) You run the program and use "File->Open", and navigate to and choose the file.

(b) You use Windows Explorer to navigate to a file, [double-click it to get the "default "action", or else better to] right-click on it and click a specific suitable "action" like "Play" [or "Open"].
This uses registry settings to decide how the file should be handled = which program to use to complete the "action" ["Play" would be best (therefore should be the default action)].
If there was anything wrong with the registry settings things would probably not work as desired.

(c) You open a suitable program...
And lets say you minimize it to the taskbar.
Then you drag a suitable file and hover it over the program button on the taskbar until the program opens on the desktop, then drop the file onto the program window.
This uses registry settings that are different to (b) above, and may result in success when (b) fails.

2. Could you tell us more clearly/precisely what sequence of actions you completed.
