I just came to shut down after hours of browsing and there on the desktop was an OS box saying something like:

"In order for the System Settings Changes to take effect, you must reboot. Yes or No". I know for certain I have not made any system changes.

I clicked No and did a complete scan; no findings, but I'm guessing if it is a virus, it'll only load itself when I reboot?

Is this malicious and if so what steps should I take please? I'm scared of turning my PC off!

I have Trend Micro Internet Security and Windows XP.

Thanks

Is Windows Update turned on?

Yes!

Oh is that all it is?

Now I feel a right fool!

No need to feel foolish...if you forget you have it on, it can be an eye opener when an update happens. It never hurts to ask...because if you didn't have it on, then what you feared would most likely be the case.

Thanks MJC - normally something comes on the screen to tell me it's an update. But I don't remember that happening yesterday. I was pretty engrossed in my work though, so I could just have ignored it.

I've had it happen to me...where I'd click the update and cancel the reboot instead of agreeing and then forgetting about it. Or even just letting it go an then shutting down later and having that pop up...
