Gaming monitor

1) I was thinking of getting a 30 inch monitor for gaming. I have been told at the native resolution of 2560 x 1600 I would struggle to play decent games at full game spec even with 2 high end graphics cards in SLI. Would you agree?

2) Is it true that if I scaled the resolution down when playing games or even in general use the image quality would suffer?

First instincts would tell me that high end gfx cards in SLI should handle a hi res nicely; on the other hand, lowering res does lower image quality by some degree. i'd only do that if i were suffering from majorly low fps.
