I'M TRYING TO BACKUP SOME FILE BEFORE I RECONFIGURE MY HARD DRIVE AND
LOSE THIS INFORMATION. I WENT TO START/PROGRAM/ACCESORIES AND CAN NOT
FIND A PROMPT TO START FILE(S) BACKUP. I TRIED TO LOAD THE BACKUP
UTILITY FROM MY WINDOWS 98 CD, BUT IT DIDN'T WORK

To install Backup go to Start\Settings\Control Panel and double click Add/Remove Programs then click the Windows Setup tab. Backup should be in the System Tools section, have the CD ready.
Backup on my machine only has options to backup to tape drive or file, I'm not sure if a CD writer would show up, so if you don't have a tape drive Backup might not be the answer.
The original DOS Backup supported floppies, but it took a lot of them...If you have a second hard drive that won't be formatted, you can backup to files, otherwise you'll have to copy the files you want to save to floppies in Windows Explorer. That means anything too large to fit on a floppy will be very difficult if not impossible to save.
