I have been using AVG with ZoneAlarm for quite awhile with no problems until today.

Today there was a big problem with AVG's updated virus definition and iTunes.

See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2092831&start=1&tstart=0

So I uninstalled AVG and replaced it with Avast. But upon loading Avast for the first time, it stated there was an incompatibility with Zone Alarm (which was then covered up by another dialog box that I couldn't move).

What do you guys recommend as a good firewall/anti-virus combination?

I am using the free versions of all the referenced software. I did find this URL:

http://nevcal.com/glenn/avast_setup.html

which seems to indicate that Avast and Zone Alarm Free should be compatible but I'd like to get your thoughts.

Use the Sygate Personal Firewall.. (http://www.filehippo.com/download_sygate_personal_firewall/)

Going to your link:
"Note that from November 30th, 2005 all Sygate consumer firewall products have been discontinued but this versions is available here for free use."

Is this firewall software 3+ years old?

Yes, but if you are using XP it's about 8 years old. This is without a doubt the best and most comprehensive firewall for XP.

I also (unfortunately) have a Vista home premium O/S on an HP laptop. What firewall/antivirus combo do you recommend for that machine?

Avast AV and the built in Windows Firewall are OK. Sunbelt should have a firewall that does Vista
