I'm installing a new modem, for which windows does not have a driver. I've downloaded a driver I believe to be correct, and now, need instructions for installation. Thanks!

Depends on the modem type.
Hardware modem:
Disable COM2 (serial port 2F8) in BIOS
Make sure it's unzipped, most drivers are self extractors, put it in its own folder and double click it. That should unzip the file into the folder.
Open Device Manager, highlight the modem, click Properties then the Driver tab and click Update Driver. When the next window opens, check the box that says "Specify a Location" and browse to the driver file. Click Next and you should see a window with a list of modems, pick the correct one and click Next, follow the onscreen prompts.
Software Modem: (LT winmodem, other winmodems, most PCI, HSF and HCF)
These are software based and must be installed using the setup or install file in the driver. Unzip the file, look for a readme file and read it, then look for setup.exe or install.exe. I think it's usually setup.exe, and double click that file. That will install the modem.
In some cases you have to have the modem physically removed from the motherboard to install it, hopefully the readme file will tell you that. Sometimes the COM port should be enabled in BIOS, other times disabled. Try it and see, if you try to use it and get a communication or conflict error, change the setting in BIOS, and see if it works.

It would really help if you could tell us whether the modem you bought fits into one of the Black slots or White slots on the motherboard...it will speed up the help for you....ie is it a ISA or PCI modem?

I believe it's PCI (white slot). I plan to try to install it this weekend. Thanks for your help!
