I have a 800 pentium 3 with a dvd and my video card is a nvidia geforce 256. I hooked up the s-video out to my tv so that i could watch movies on it but when i try and play a dvd movie the window goes yellow and in the middle it says macrovision. then when i close the window i get a glimpse of the movie for just a second as the window is closing. My desktop shows up fine on my tv but it just won't play dvd's. I am wondering what the problem could be because my dvd player will play them fine on my regular monitor but when i select the tv out it wont. I am wondering if their are certain settings i need to change or what?

I assume your TV has a S-video INPUT jack as well and you have the TV set to the S-video setting...if all that is good, try another S-video cable (yours might be bad)or get out the manual for the GForce card to make sure you have all of the correct drivers and settings in puter right...other than that its either the S-vid on computer vid card is bad or S-vid on TV might not be working.

This is one of the biggest irritations for dvd owners...you probably will not be able to get it to play on your tv due to macrovision copy-protection...if you could export the dvd image to an outside source like your tv, then you could also export it to a vcr and make a copy...that is what macrovision prevents...

It is also the reason that the apex dvd player that came out a while ago was so popular, in addition to playing mp3s burnt onto cdrs, it had a hidden menu that allowed you to disable macrovision...it works, I have one...but in your case I don't think you're gonna be able to do it, at least I haven't ever seen it done, but you could look around at www.divx-digest.com (http://www.divx-digest.com) there's lots of info there and at dvd digest, their sister site...good luck

I'm confused.....I have a stand alone DVD player which plays DVD's to the TV and I can hook my VCR into TV and I assume copy whatever is playing...Are you saying that I wouldnt be able to make a VCR of whatever was playing on the TV (because of this Macrovision copyright stuff?) or is this just related to DVD's coming from a puter into a TV???

You should not be able to record the output of a standalone dvd player to a vcr (provided macrovision works) although it may be possible...have you ever tried it? It's not illegal to make a backup copy of something you own a license to, provided you do not distribute or profit from the backups...

That's part of the reason people are upset about the dvd encryption issue...until the encryption was broken, you had now way of protecting your investment...you scratch a dvd and there goes $20...with rippers and the divx codec, you can now make pretty good copies of a dvd movie...

I've never tried to copy a dvd with my vcr, although that's one of the things my apex is supposed to do since it can disable macrovision...let me know if it works on a regular player...

As far as the computer dvd to tv...I don't know...it seems like that should work, but again, that may be one of the functions of macrovision...

I've never tried it.......how would the DVD equipment know if it was sending signal to a TV and the TV signal was then going to a VCR? How do it know???!!!!

This is double posted (A/V troubleshooting.
I did a little more looking and came up with a list of video cards that w/TVout that hvae problems with DVD and the Gforce was one of them, sorry but I think even if you go directly to TV you may have problems with it unless you use some kind of "hack" to get around it.

Randy...I thought the same thing, and I still haven't found an answer for that one...I guess they're just sneaky...
