It Says Installing Updates but never shuts down

I have a windows xp home sp2 machine which says "Installing Updates" but it never shuts down. Should I power it off or what? The problem is that update 1 of 15 is still installing after five hours!

Shut it down, re-start and manually run the updates....

I turned it off by holding down the power button as it wouldn't respond, and it came up just fine. When I rebooted the only update listed under auto updates was SP3, which I didn't want to install, but after another reboot the original 15 updates are there:confused:

The computer did have some spyware on it.

Always remove infections before adding more complications. Post a HJT log and clean it up, THEN load the updates.
