Okay guys and gals, I hope someone can help me...but I am not too sure what I am needing to ask...here goes anyway. I have a friend who works in an office that uses MS backup to backup her computer. She has been having trouble backing up the last couple of days, and she called "someone" to help her...that person said that she needs to "reset the DOS archive bit." The problem is that none of us know how to do that. I told her that I would ask you fine folks, so....

Thanks,
Dan

Sea...thanks for the link, but I don't think that my friend is using the "Pro" version that is talked about on that website...it is my understanding that she is using the backup program that comes with Windows 98...sorry for the confusion.

The Archive file attribute can be set in Windows Explorer. Select one or more files, right-click with the mouse, then select Properties and click the Archive box, then OK.

Hey thanks, now another question...does anyone know the name of the archive bit file? Now I know how to change the attribute, but I don't know the name of the file. Thanks again.

Don't think we can help on that one, only the person doing the backup knows the name of the file he or she is trying to backup, and therefore change the attributes of...

I assume your friend is running the backup program herself onto a tape drive attached to her computer -- is that correct?

There are various options like progressive, differential, equitorial, abdominal, etc... some options overwrite what's already on the tape, and some options just append to what's already there -- some options only back up files with the archive bit set, then clear the archive bit...

Geesh -- this doesn't give us much to go on -- is the computer plugged in? Is there smoke coming out of it? Seriously -- are there any error messages?

Backup is something that you usually do overnight -- it's even more boring than defrag... Then again if she's working for the gum'mint...

There is no "archive bit file" -- rather, each individual file has its own archive bit -- the good news is that you can select all the files in a directory, and set the archive bit for all the files at one time ...

Upon further reflection -- why is this person bothering to do daily backups? Say her HDD has a meltdown, and she's left with tape drive and a backup tape? Is she going to know what to do? Has anybody ever checked to ensure that she is backing up what she thinks she is backing up? e.g. do a (partial) restore to a different location and see if the files are actually restored.

later...
