I have four strips of 128MB SDRAM, PC133 MHz memory, I can install three of them in any sequence in the four slots provided but when I try to install the fourth one Windows will not start because it does not have enough memory, or so it tells me. I have tried all the memory in different sequences so it's not a bad memory strip. With the three strips in place Windows reads the full 384 MB I have a ASUS-CUBX-E motherboard, Pentium III 800 MHz processor. Windows 98 second edition. Any ideas?

I would try Asus tech support, if that fails, the microsoft knowledge base may help...there is an issue with Windows 95/98 where it will not start with 1gb or more of ram installed, but that shouldn't be the problem here...

Barring anything else, you might want to try updating to the latest bios revision...sometimes that's all it takes, good luck

I would also check the motherboard manual and see if it supports that much memory. Seems like it should...but I haven't looked up a manual for it.

Yes, the motherboard can take double that amount. Has anyone ever heard of a compatibility problem with two different types of RAM? For instance I have two strips of generic or OEM, and two strips of Infineon both PC 133 SDRAM but one is a lot cheaper than the other. -- Jim

I have had problems occasionally with two different makes of SDRAM ....in which I couldnt get say two "sticks"(as you call em) to post up correctly, but could get ea. module to individually post up fine. It certainly CAN happen! Try the offending "stick" on it's own......does it post up???

Sorry.......I just realized that you have already determined ALL of the sticks were good........Try this(if you havent already)...dont put any memory in Dimms 1 and put the three sticks in 2-3-4.......does it work? I'm thinking dimms slot #4 could be bad.

This is certainly a learning experience. -- It has been suggested that it could be a weak power supply that causes all the RAM not to be recognized properly. Should I spend a few bucks and upgraded? Or is that just too far out? - Jim http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Another clue:

When I shut down the computer for a couple of hours and then restart, the RAM count goes up to 448 MB, strange? -- Jim http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
