Hey folks,
I recently received a 17" monitor from a good friend saying that if i could fix it, i could have it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif.
I connected it to my PC and here's what happens; The screen stays black!! But, when i turn the contrast knop the screen starts to flikker showing the POST, etc. Mind you you can only see these images for a fraction of a second. This only happens when i turn the knop to the left or right rapidly. This means the monitor i receiving power and i think there's something wrong with the resistor responsible for the contrast setting. I haven't opened the monitors case (yet) in fear of electric shock http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
Does anyone have some ideas/experience on how to fix this?
I read something somewhere on how to safely discharge the monitor, but i can't remember where anymore. Already went through the Trouble shooting expert.
Thanx in advance

DONT OPEN THE CASE.........unless you REALLY know what you are doing. I have read Pete's posts many times regarding the huge amounts of voltage/ amperage that can be stored for months in Monitors...it can be a killer!
Just be aware that the repair of a monitor can often times reach as high as 2/3 the cost of a new one and it sounds like your color guns are gone on that one.

Hello,
I have been repairing monitors and tv's for the past 25 years and thank the lord due to a change in my duties (now doing training and tech support)
I am now rarely sticking my fingers in one. This can be extremely hazardous
to your health by opening one of these up. If you can read my other posts I can not advise even opening a monitor unless you have been trained by a qualified technician. I've received my fair share of shocks and been put off work for a day from one of them, it was not a good feeling. The best advice I can give you is to take it to your local tv repair shop and have them deal with it.

LOL
Thanx guys, surely i'm very carefull and am very hesitant to open the case. You won't believe it but the problem is solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just gave the monitor a fair wack with the back of my screwdriver (just under the contrast knop) and it worked. Have been running it for about 30 minutes know with no problems. I just shut it down to see wether it will start up when it's cooled down.
It's not the right way to repair things, but hey.... if it works http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

We had a saying when I worked in refineries years ago as a youngster. If all else fails, get a bigger hammer! Strange to see it even considered with computers, but I've had to slap a monitor or two at times, and cross my fingers...glad I finally got a better one...
If it comes up with problems again you might try some aerosol contact cleaner from an electronics store, spray it into the knob from outside the case and work it back and forth a few times, let it dry for a while and see if it helped.
I strongly agree with the above advice, don't open the case, the CRT can be deadly and the capacitors can ruin your day at best... They can be drained, and I could dig up instructions, but I don't think that's a topic I'd want to post here, for fear someone would get hurt anyway.

I read all the significant articles on this site http://www.repairfaq.org/REPAIR/F_monfaq.html and decided its not worth opening the case and getting spiked hair.
After the monitor had cooled down i tried starting it up again with no succes. It seems like this is the problem for as soon as it warms up its runs smoothly. In its cold status the only way to get a picture is by rapidly turining the knop right or left. This only helps for a fraction of a second. Apart from thinking its the resistor mayby you guys have any idea.
I've tried finding the manual at the maufacturers site but as you would suspect.....no luck http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif
I'll even try another video cable. I've noticed a sharp bent near the cable shield. Maybe this helps
Do you mean using compressed air Pete? I've got a cannister here so i can try that.
If this doesn't help......out the window it goes http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Nope, not compressed air, contact cleaner. It's usually right beside the compressed air at Radio Shack. Spray it into the knob with power turned off, work it back and forth a few times to clean off the contacts inside, let it dry for a bit and try it. The knob is actually a rheostat, with a spiral wire inside and a contact on a plate on the end of the knob shaft, creating more or less resistance as you turn it. Over time dust and smoke residue build up inside and it loses contact.

Sure Pete,
Notice my profile. I'm from the Netherlands and haven't got Radio Shack here.....but i get the point.
With all the warnings i've received, isn't it a contradiction to spray any fluids in the case http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/confused.gif
