hey guys,
i am working on a friends pc for him. it is a gateway astro pc. the one that is all one piece. (junk). he is having problems with his modem. when he tries to connect, it comes back with a fatal 630 error. modem not responding.i have been through all the software aspects, and their are no conflicts or sharing of com ports. so, he brought me a new modem to install, and when i removed the monitor to get to the board, i see were the modem jack is on the board, but it is not connected to a pci card. it is just hooked to the board. is this one of them e machine jobs to were you can not do anything with it. (mr. gates). i guess my question is, is were do i go from here to install a new modem. i hope i have explained this good enough to understand what i am saying. if not, just ask me anything you need to know and i will respond rather quickly. i will be checking back about every hour waiting to hear from you. thanks guys. keep up the good work. your the best. I would look in the BIOS to see if it can be disabled. But even if it can't you should still be able to install another modem and use it for the Dial up networking profile.

Even if you can disable it in the bios, you want to be sure to delete it in Windows. If it CANT be disabled, then leave it in Windows and go to Control Panel/System/Device Mgr ......and go to the modem sect and "Disable in this hardware configuration". Now you can set up the other modem.

First, that's known as an integrated motherboard, and Mr. Gates had little to do with that...Microsoft didn't design the motherboard...
The suggestions above are certainly good, you might also have to look up a motherboard manual and see if the board has a jumper on it to disable the onboard modem. Then you should be able to remove it from Control Panel in Safe Mode, and Windows shouldn't see or install it any more. From there it should be typical hardware installation, assuming you can actually disable it by jumper.

One more thing. If this machine is highly proprietery it may cause other conflicts. I just tried the same thing on a Compaq all-in-one machine and when I would set up the new modem, it would loose the cdrom. I didn't have the conflicts that the above ideas would fix, just lost the cdrom. Good luck

You can write down the BIOS ID string, which is on the boot screen, the [Pause] key will hold it long enough to write it down, any other key resumes booting. The [Esc] key should clear any company logo.
Then go to my site, posted below, and look up Trish's Escape from Hardware Hell, in the Motherboard/BIOS section you'll find links to identify motherboards and possibly get a manual.
If it's close to the same as the Compaq, you might not be able to get it to work at all, we fought one for 2 days, and finally had to set up the original plug in modem (28,800) and give the customer's computer back, with no charge. No matter what we did the machine would see the modem we put in the ISA slot, but still wanted to dial out from the one originally plugged into the motherboard. If you get lucky it might have a jumper to disable the onboard contraption, but don't get your hopes up...

I must be one of the really lucky ones http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Have a Compaq 7000 T-Bird-800Mhz , win98se, only 128 sdram and I have no problems at all. I am online 24/7 and have security camera, music, icq, aim, anti-virus, netmeeting, server, napster, word, and about 6 or 7 browser's (IE 5.01, and Netscape 4.73) plus other things all (always) running @ the same time http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
I get no BSOD's and seldom(seldom= 1x a week maybe) need to reboot to re-up on system resources. I sometimes forget what it used to be like having to re-boot and deal with 'frozen screens' anymore.
I have done allot of optimizing to win98, however the machine itself is exactly as from the factory, I just take good care of it.. de-fragment and scan disk weekly.
It is one of the best pc's I have ever had the pleasure of owning or operating, and I realize this everytime I return to it after being on (or working) any other.
hehe... just wanted to let it be known that not all compaq's are so bad (probably just most) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

Hey Tad, you might try HERE (http://http:/www.gateway.com/support/product/astro/index.shtml/). I dug a little and it seems you might find the specifics you are looking for if you go a little further. Good luck
