View Full Version : Saving Issues
Hey PC-Peeps (drug joke anyone?)
Recently I've been having some troubles with saving files; now I'm not talking about saving files that are written on my computer. I mean downloading an image (just an example, it happens to EVERY FILETYPE) and saving it into my pictures or a folder in my documents.
I did a little looking and it seems that anything I download instantly goes to 0 bytes, all the information on the file is wiped and whenever I try to access it it comes out blank.
I really need help, if I need to post this in another section I will, but I'm sure it has to do with a security problem.
Okay, so it's not a security problem, I was browsing google search (it's reliable...)
I came across one situation that was like mine:
http://www.phoca.cz/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=5907
their situation was resolved
I don't know what to do... HELP ME PC GUIDE D: :(

Which browser or which downloading client application are you attempting to download the files with?
Also which Operating System are you running?

Mozilla Firefox (Latest Version)
It's download manager (I'm pretty sure, it might be flashget)
Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit)
I'm a pretty big noob when it comes to tech issues like this >.>

Does the same thing happen with Internet Explorer?
If you open the File > Download window in Firefox does it also show 0 bytes for the previous non-downloads?
Is Vista's UAC (User Access Control) blocking the download? You would normally be asked for and/or have to agree to some sort of confirmation by Vista before the download could proceed. Often there is a bar for this towards the top of the browser window.

I'm heavily confused *frown*
IE works, but FF doesn't... so it has to be an issue with mozilla's browser.
Previous download sizes are listed as their original size, but when I look in their properties, it's not the same.

UAC doesn't ask to agree/disagree when I save files during download, just asks where to download it...
I tried a different download manager and the same thing happened =/
Also, Internet Explorer no longer works for downloading, both running and saving just don't work.

There are a number of results from a Google Search (http://www.google.ie/#hl=en&q=vista+downloads+0kb&start=0&sa=N&fp=e51dcc0862117ee1) with an identical scenario but with no resolution that I could find.
A number of them seem to coincide with the installation of SP2 but the similarities with your problem make it look like a Vista bug of some sort.
You might want to try a System Restore or to uninstall SP2 if you have it installed and that is an option available under add/remove. Unless MS post a fix it looks like a re-installation of Windows or an attempted repair of the installation using the setup DVD.
You could try running chkdsk from a command prompt but I wouldn't hold up a lot of hope.

Now that I think of it, my system has been slowly going to **** since SP2... windows live failed on me hardcore for the past half-month.
I'll probably just system restore, I need to anyways. Thanks for the help Paul.

Installing any service pack is not a trivial matter. I generally disable system restore on my own systems but would always set a restore point before such upgrades and on systems that are complicated and that I want to avoid having to repair or reinstall I would always create an image file with BiNG or ImageForDOS before proceeding with the SP installation.
