View Full Version : Prevent Mac users from seeing WinXP folders

I have about 15 computers on a network. Most of them Mac OS 10.5, and a couple XP Pro systems. I don't want the Mac users to have access to the XP folders through the network. Basically when trying to access one Mac from another Mac it asks for a password, XP doesn't. It just lets all users (other PC's as well) right in with full access.

I would prefer to password protect all shared folders on the PC's but can't seem to figure it out.

All PC's are XP PRO. Simple File Sharing is turned off. All have a password on the Admin account. They are in a simple MSHOME workgroup.

Some methods I've seen online say to uncheck "Share this Folder" under Properties > Sharing, then it will require a password to access it. Instead it just becomes unavailable through the network.

Other methods claim that if I check "Encrypt contents to secure data" under Properties > General > Advanced tab it will then require a password. Nope, all network access is granted to all computers.

I'm at a bit off a loss here and I'm not a network expert obviously. It's funny, I always see "how can I access xxx through my network?" For me it's the opposite, everything already IS accessible and I don't want it to be.

Thanks for any help.

Disable the guest account.

Make sure there is a user name and password that is common to all machines accessing the network. Alternately you can use a firewall to allow only the MAC addresses of the PC's you want to have access and block the Apple PC's

I agree with Classicsoftware, you have granulated control of shared folders in XP Pro if you add only authorized users to the file share permissions and remove the Everyone permission.

I also wanted to point out you should never share the whole drive in Windows, only specific shared folders and you want to uncheck the read permissions for the group named Everyone and only add permissions to individual XP users.
If share permissions are properly applied, the Mac users would find a password is required to view shared files located on the XP PCs just like they have to do for shared files on the Macs.
