I have a xion onyx computer case and asus mobo w/am2 socket. there is a headphone jack down at the bottom right corner adjacent to the power button. i plugged it in and then my computer just hard shuts down. power is going to the mobo but i can't even boot up the computer. i tried removing the headphones, sound card, psu, hdd, unwiring the headphone jack(all this one at a time), anf don't know how to find what the problem is. I just hope it,s not a dead motherboard. Oh, and the headphones are humming when i have them in. Any help is appreciated. God it's a pain typing this on my wii.

Sure sounds like something is wired incorrectly...like maybe that headphone jack is not wired to an audio connection.

If you have pulled every thing and still can't get it to boot, the next thing to try, before assigning the fault to the motherboard, is to try a different power supply.

And DO NOT plug the head phones into that jack until you figure out where it is connected to...

okay so i finally figured out it wasn't the power supply. i rewired the chassis mounted headphone jack to the audio card and the computer started up. but i'm not getting any signal and i can't hold the button down to shut it off. i have to flip the switch on the unit to cut it off. i'm not hearing any bios beeps or the vista sign on screen sound. the board beeped when i had no power connector going to the video card, but that's the only sound i got out of it.

EDIT: i also left the headphone jack unplugged and it didn't do anything different.

hey i have the exact same problem. do you have all the fans starting up as normal but nothing else happening? Also my mouse or keyboard don't seem to be receiving any power either. Its just really odd me it happened in the middle of a game of Modern warfare 2 my headphones freaked out(ie: chaotic hissy noises lol) then shut down and no nothing anymore

Alright, it's been about half a year now, but my computer's been fixed for a while, so i'll just go ahead and give the info for whomever might have the same problem.

It was the power supply. I had no way of testing it to see if it could do anything different, because of what damage it had done, i couldn't substitute a different power supply to see a different effect on when it starts up. I had to replace the motherboard (twice actually, because i couldn't see the dumb mistake i made >:( and maybe the cpu... but i was already planning on upgrading my cpu anyway, so i have nothing other than mixed memory of it lol... anyway, hope this helps.
