I would like to upgrade my CPU or processor speed and don't want to look absolutely clueless when I shop. Please advise.

When you boot your computer wait until you see the second screen, with a rectangular block at top, then use the [Pause] key to hold that screen so you can read it. CPU should be listed on the left, and this same screen should list other useful info about your system. Memory amount and type, COM and LPT ports, etc.
If you have a logo screen that covers this, [Esc] soon as it pops up will clear it.

Or you can download wcpuid from this url:
http://cgi2.tky.3web.ne.jp/~nrklv/cgi-bin/softdl.cgi?wcpu30b103.exe
It will give you all kinds of info on your cpu...

hiredgoonz????
I'm not trying to overstep my bounds here but personally I think you should change that link above.
It should target the page that explains what, where, and how the (exe.) is so that prior to just clicking on it someone will know what they are getting into and make their own decision as to weather to get it or not.

Actually, when I click the link I posted, it takes you to the main page (same url sleddog posted)...just like most cgi links...I posted that one after making sure the prog was still available...I guess some browsers work differently...
If someone downloads and installs a program just cause I tell em to, and it breaks their computer/contains a virus/or leaves the toilet seat up...well, I guess they should have checked it out first, eh? I had the name of the prog listed...any responsible user would check something out before they install it...

with all that responsibility at the forum he's the Moderator of, it's surprising Sea has time to come over here and critique you hiredgoonz ! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I've taken heat for a couple of posts recently...just out of curiosity, what happens when you guys click the link I posted?
I was lazy and just posted the last url after I had checked the download cause most cgis I've seen take you to the main page (which that ones does to me)
I'm not trying to trick anybody...wcpuid is a pretty common prog, but people forget about it alot...I mean, hey there are worse urls one could post...I found a site that has every virus I've ever heard of (and lots I haven't) available for d/l...
Sea makes a good point though...don't do something just cause somebody tells you to...cause not everybody who posts is correct or has your best interests at heart...
For what its worth both take me to the same page (hiredgoonz's through a new browser window, sleddog's in the main window...????).
I try to post links as close to the information I'm suggesting as possible, if it is a site then the main page, a "how to" article that article, a program the info page about that program if it lets me if not the main page. We all could probably be a little more careful with our links.
You can also find out in the BIOS setup itself, usually on the first page (the one with the date and time and other general info)

I see nothing wrong with the link, it does pop up a Windows "Install on Demand" box to install Japanese language support, but that's pretty common, since I haven't checked the "forget it" box. After I close that box, it goes to a download link page, not to an actual download, so I don't see what the gripe is...you have to click the download link to actually start the download, so it's not like he's leaving people no choice in the matter...sleddogg's link goes through the exact same routine and ends up at the exact same page.

I also got the "Install on Demand" boxes on both. From Hired's link I went to the "Download" link page like Pete. From Sledd's link I went to a main page with several options
