My friend's computer running Windows 98 will not boot into Windows. The Windows 98 splash screen comes up and then he gets:
"problem running GDI.exe" then he gets the splash screen "It Is Now Saved to Shut down Your Computer" it was running okay before this happened. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like problems from something installed recently, or maybe a corrupt file. Use the [F8] hey or hold [Ctrl] while booting to get to the start up menu, and choose Command Prompt Only. At the C:\> prompt type scanreg_/restore using a space in place of the underscore ( _ ) used here. Replace the registry with a good backup made before this problem started. If that doesn't do it, we'll see what else to try.

Thanks Pete, he took it to the computer store and paid $60 to have it fixed, they probably done just what you said!

Either that or they reinstalled windows, but probably not for $60, it's a 2 hour job and most shops charge $40 per hour at least...My guess would be either scanreg or rename system.dat and user.dat and rename older ones.
