hello all

i have a problem with my pc....when i restart or just shut down....sometimes my computer gets stuck on the loading "windows xp" screen...with the little running thing under it and it just keeps loading and loading and doesn't start...and if i try to restart in safe mode it doesn't work as well..what can this mean?

sometimes
There's a big difference between sometimes and never.

Slow/retarded startups in Safe Mode implies such things as a hard drive developing bad sectors or intrinsic problems with the file system. It is important to know whether things are just not completing or whether the whole proces is just slow. Turn on and go for a walk and have a cup of tea and see if it is still stuck in the same spot.

i tried that before...started it and went to take a shower when i got back about 15 mins later it was still doing the same thing. it doesn't always do it. also it sometimes takes a while for it to load up as well... i don't turn off or restart much either.

@ PaulK,

I have a computer with the same problem and have never been able to isolate the reason.

It gets to the scrolling `...` and just scrolls across the screen indefinitely. But also, not at every cold boot. The longer it cools, the more of a chance it will happen. Even barebones boot.

The only way I have been able for it to never happen is to tap the reset button as soon as I hear the successful POST beep. It seems to be that something does not have enough time to load (hardware-wise?) prior to the Windows splash screen. So the extra time involved doing 2 quick-boots, gives whatever piece of hardware or discovery time enough to register before Windows begins to load.

I can change from quick boot to the full memory test boot but this takes f-o-r-e-v-e-r with newer systems compared to old smaller cache processors. But it does solve the problem though the boot time takes w-a-y longer.

It is a dual-boot system and my next attempt to solve the issue will be to change the OS choice screen from 5 seconds to 10 or 15 and see if it is enough time to allow all to load properly.

Hopefully this sparks some ideas which may help the OP or myself.
