I HAVE A COMPAQ 1200 LAPTOP ON WHICH THE MOUSE POINTER IS HARD TO CONTROL.
I GET IT TO A POINT CLOSE TO WHERE I WANT TO CLICK AND THE NEXT MOVE IT JUMPS TO A SPOT THAT IS DISTANT.
HELP!

Short of taking it into a repair facility...I would just put a SERIAL mouse on it and use that....I could never use those pointer thingys anyways...and if the controls in Control Panel/Mouse cant fix it then you may have dirt or something in there that is causing jerky movement...and it would take a technician to get it out.

THANX FOR THE RESPONSE RANDY.

I SHOULD ALSO HAVE NOTED THAT THE LAPTOP HAS A BUILT IN TOUCHPAD AND IT IS DOING THE SAME ERRATIC MOVEMENTS.

I HAVEN'T AS YET ADDED A MOUSE DRIVER, BUT JUST PLUGGED A MOUSE INTO THE MOUSEPORT.

I WILL PROBABLY COPY THE TOUCHPAD PAD INTO A FILE OF A DIFFERENT NAME AND THE DELETE[REMOVE] IT AND INSTALL A NEW MOUSE DRIVER.

THINK THIS WILL WORK?

You shouldn't have to do anything with the touchpad drivers. Laptops from my experiances are designed to work with both devices at the same time. I have the same model and have plugged a couple differant devices into the PS/2 port with no problems. I am not sure if you are saying the regular mouse is giving you the movement problem or just the touchpad. The touchpad is heat sensitive and if a second fingertip makes the slightest contact while moving the pointer around, it will jerk away. If it is the mouse also, I would recommend cleaning the ball and rollers on the bottom side. Let us know how it goes.

thanx for the response

both the touchpad and the mouse give this irratic movement.

removing the mouse does not help.

First update the drivers, and see if it helps. If not, start looking for something running in the background. I've seen the same problem with desktops when Task Scheduler tried to run defrag, and the virus scanner wasn't turned off, so defrag never finished, and even after a dozen reboots still tried to run. The mouse pointer jerked around the screen and flickered.

Shut down everything possible that's running in the background and see if that helps, and cutting the video resolution back a notch might help too. If you have a ton of icons on the desktop, backgrounds and wallpaper, it's taking system resources to redraw the screen 60-72 times a second, and something has to wait. It could be your mouse...
