Hi I Hope Somebody can help I am looking for a program so as I can repair or even read all or part of my CD-RW. I formatted it so I could use it as a floppy style option, I used it without no sizns of errors on it over the last 3 months, then 1 day I tried to use it and I just can't read it,normally I am very careful with discs so I was very surprized when this happened. I know I should of had a backup but I add to it every day or so. The program I used to format the disc is DirectCD 3 I have tried the scandisc option but all I get is the root directory is unreadable or words similar I would be very grateful for any help.

If you cant read it when it is in the same R/W cd unit you recorded it with, you may have only done the setup prior to recording thinking you were actually recording; however, if you are certain you recorded the information and are trying to read it on a regular CD rom unit....then the computer must have Win 98 to load the small program (I forget the name of it) to allow the infor. to be read on a standard cd. It might help if you give us some more details of what computer you are trying to "see" the information you recorded on.

HI Randy_tx The programme/software you are refering to is UDF reader this allows standard cd roms to read CD-RW's.
I have tried this disc in both drives the writer the none writer and its the same. I am running a 200meg mmx processor running windows 98se. Its always been OK in the past.Never has there been an error I know its the Disc because I have tried others and they work fine.mb

Wow.......I hope you can get to the bottom of it cause I back up to a CD/RW too and now I'm thinking I need more than one backup to be safe!!

Does the Writer still burn cd's ok ? Can you "read" another CD with it right now? I'm thinking maybe the Burner is going out or something....

I had the same problem with Adaptec's DirectCD. I had prepped the disks for it and had been occasionally writing files to the disks, but DirectCD crashed my system during two of the write sessions and the disks were unreadable after that. I couldn't find any way to recover the disks.

I switched to Nero and use the multi-session option. A multi-session disk can be used immediately in another CD reader without having to close the disk or use reader software, and you can keep adding files as long as space remains on the CD. More importantly, I have had no bad burns or data loss with Nero (http://www.ahead.de).

Here is a CD-R Diagnostic (http://www.fileflash.com/index.aspx?action=info&program=679) program that may be able to recover data, and a PCBuyers guide to CD disaster relief (http://www.pcbuyersguide.com/hardware/storage/CD_disaster_relief.html).

Just in case you overlooked the obvious here...

Perhaps you did do something to the disk? Contraty to popular belief, a CD can become unstable, or unusable by writing on the top of it. Scratches, and even certain magic markers can cause your disk error.

... remember, CD's are written to from the top...

An obstruction on the top of the CD can cause the light to refract in a bad way.

... never summer.
