View Full Version : Tearing Problem

I just reformatted my computer because it was becoming slow and unresponsive. I've done it many times before. However, I always have to do lots of things when it restarts to get it working properly (make graphics in the games I play appear normally). Usually, when I restart, the games have lots of Tearing in.

So, I downloaded the latest drivers for my graphics card, disabled write combining (sorted the problem in oblivion when I used to play it), got directx 9.0c (10 doesn't work) and fiddled with the nvidia control panel to get a clear image, yet I still have tearing in the game I'm trying to play (World of Warcraft: wrath of the lich king). The only other thing I can remember doing is downloading an update for my BIOS or motherboard or whatever it's called, but I don't know how to find out what make it is or where to get the update.

1) Could anyone help with getting the update for my motherboard or tell me how to find it?
2) If this doesn't work, can anyone think of any other reason why there would still be tearing? I know it's possible to play the game without tearing as I've been doing it for a year. I have no problem with temperatures.

Just thought: I have also gone onto the WoW forums to look for similar problems. The only one that kind of worked was to run it in Windowed mode. This removed tearing upon loading the game but, as soon as I move, it starts tearing again.

Honestly your video card barely meets the minimum requirements. Your only chance of getting it to run decent is to turn down all the settings to the lowest possible, particularly the resolution. Bump it up from there until you start to have problems again and back it off a little.

Next thing is to buy a new video card. (recommended)

Well, the game has worked fine without any problems... My video card may be low, but I have still been able to run the game on high with no problems until my computer became laden with spyware (or whatever it is) and started to run slow. Then the only thing I had was lag. I've tried it on all settings now and it's just the tearing problem which, because I have posted about this before about a year ago, is solved by updating my BIOS. Apparently it allows my graphics card to do something and then the tearing goes.

Unfortunately, the guy last year just gave me the link to download it from but didn't tell me how to do it.

Are you looking to find the BIOS update for your motherboard?? Or, do you already have it but don't know how to flash the BIOS??

I think I'm looking for the actual BIOS update for my motherboard... I don't remember the word flashing.

I've been doing some searching and have found the following names for my motherboard: 8SIMLNF and SiS650-NECC.

I'm afraid I'm computer illiterate so can't give any more information other than I need to update its drivers. :S

There is a difference between an update for the motherboard drivers and and update for the BIOS. Did you say you've downloaded and installed the latest motherboard drivers? Or, you are looking for where to find them?

Do you have the manual that came with your motherboard?

If not, you can freeze your boot screen by pressing the Pause/Break button on the keyboard. You should see at the bottom of the screen a number that is assigned to your particular motherboard. If we have that number we can search for your motherboard manufacturer and find updated drivers if new ones exist.

At the moment I am looking for where to find them...

As I said, I'm computer illiterate, so please excuse the terminology. Last time I had this problem, the guy that helped me said that my "motherboard?" wasn't able to run the graphics card. He then gave me a link to download something for my "motherboard?" that was an update... I assume it was an update to the motherboards drivers but I honestly cannot remember. I don't know enough about a BIOS and a motherboard to be able to tell the difference... Do you by any chance know what 8SIMLNF is because it rings a bell from last time? Is that a BIOS or a motherboard?

As for the manual, no I don't. My mother, being nice and clean, decided to throw everything away: including all the details I had written down for how to fix my computer after a factory setting reboot thing and I only realised after I'd done the factory reboot.

Since I am in factory mode, would it hurt to update both my BIOS and my motherboard?

Thanks for your help, btw.

I just tried doing that pause/break key. I had three opening screens: one with my graphics thing on, one grey screen where I could press F2 and F8 for other options and one black screen with a lot of writing. I couldn't find any reference to my motherboard on any screen...

I lie, there was one number on the first screen: 5.73.22.33.52

Edit: I think this is my graphics card number.

Actually, what we are looking for is a BIOS string such as shown in this article: http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/moboid2.html

I think there is a downloadable utility to find it...I'll have to see if I can locate the utility.

Is this a prebuilt or a custom built machine?

Well, it appears that it is a Gigabyte motherboard: But your number appears slightly incorrect

No, I tried looking on the gigabyte website as well, but I couldn't find the one for my motherboard...

I'm just gonna get a new computer. It's 7 years old this one and yes it is custom built. :(

Thank you very much for your help Whyzman.

Technology has changed dramatically during the past 7 years. New...would probably not be a bad idea especially with all the new demands gaming software is making on the video cards.

In the meantime, if you would like to see if we can locate updated drivers for your motherboard. If you can get us the BIOS string on the boot screen perhaps we can locate this enigmatic (I love that word) motherboard! :D

You aren't located in the US, are you? Somewhere in Europe, probably the UK, because it seems to be that motherboard is a Packard-Bell 'special'...in other words, Gigabyte made it under contract/specifically for PB. And the UK is basically where PB machines are still available.

Was this machine a Packard-Bell that started as a base model and then had things customized during purchase? Or was it completely custom built in a shop?

Drivers and BIOS updates would be based on the original Packard-Bell configurations/naming schemes.

Whyzman, I am still unable to locate that boot screen BIOS thingy... I have tried pausing each of the screens, but I can't find a number on any of them... I then looked on a BIOS website and it said that it is normally located in the bottom left-hand corner so I did it another time looking specifically in this location, but I was still unable to find a number. Would it be in any other place or is there a piece of software I can get to find it for me? (Thanks for the continued help as well. Much appreciated. :D)

I am in the UK, yes, London. It was a base model in the shop, but I added a different graphics card and audio (card?), with a bigger harddrive and some other things that I can't remember now...

Edit: I have just seen the previous reply and am getting the software now for the BIOS string...

Edit 2: I ran the AMI thing and it said "No standard AMIBIOS indentification string detected." Then it said things like www.nec.com for support, SiS651 and 1.x...

It may be that the motherboard is using an Award BIOS rather than AMI.

You might want to try this: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/CTBIOS.shtml

Something looking like this is what we're after:http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/images/moboid7.jpg

Just downloaded it and it was in German... :S Anyways, I couldn't find any strings of numbers and I give up... I'm just gonna get a new computer.

Thank you again for your help.
