Try going to START,-> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL -> SOUNDS.
From there you can shut off or substitute new sounds for all the windows functions. If you want to get fancy you could get a microphone and use the sound recoerder built into windows and make sounds of your own...... IMAGINE ..... LOL

With desktop sounds you get all or nothing. Turn sounds on, and you have to turn down the volume if you don't want to hear it for some reason, like late at night when everyone else is asleep. Or you can use the Mute box on the volume control, but that stops all sound, same as turning the speakers down.

Those are the only ways I know of, disable sounds in Control Panel, use the Mute box or turn down either the speakers or Windows Volume Control.

And as mentioned above you can create custom sounds, by recording from microphone or CD with the Windows Sound Recorder. I set up the beginning of Jethro Tull's "Songs From the Wood" for my mother's computer, she loves it, instead of the standard Windows start up sound. You can do the same for any sound event listed in Control Panel.

If you're looking for a way to selectively mute certain sounds and not others, I don't know of a way to do it other than turning desktop sounds off completely, or removing the ones you don't want in the Control Panel's Sounds options..
