I am using Widows XP Pro and MS Word 2003. I want to number the pages of a document in the form 1.2, 1.3, etc. I have used the instructions on doing this from several manuals and from the Internet, but can't get it done.

When I attempt to do page numbering and go to the 'Insert Page Number' and then the Format mode, then select the chapter number, using a separator, I eventually get an error message, "There is no chapter number
included in the caption...."

Can anyone give me a step-by-step procedure? I know that headers & footers are involved, but it's confusing.

Thanks in advance.

I think you need to start by formatting bullets/numbers in the outline multi-level area and customised as you want it.

Then on the first page start by putting a Heading1 style there by default and it should be (or can be) formatted to be a numbered list. Or simply hit the 1,2,3 button and it should automatically become a Heading1 style.

Thereafter all pages will be in the format 1.1, 1.2, etc until you insert a second Heading1 style list number (in otherwords "Chapter 2") after which the page numbering should show 2.1, 2.2, etc.

I'm not sure if there is a way to hide the actual number 1, 2, 3 that is displayed for each "Chapter".
