View Full Version : Internet via Win 3.1?

I have a 486 DX66 with 850Mb HDD and 16Mb RAM running Win 3.1.
I'd like to use it to dial-up and browse the 'net. Does this immediately conjure up phrases involving 'side', 'splitting', and 'laughter'?
If feasible, what should I do/acquire?
All the ISP packages seem to require IE 4+, and Pentium CPUs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I had used Trumpet Winsock with Windows 3.1. This Winsock setup (http://www.asapgroup.com/support/os/win31/) shows a typical installation, but of course you need to substitute your ISP's settings and DNS numbers. You can find a lot of resources by searching with trumpet winsock 3.1, and add download to narrow down a download source. I recommend using Google (http://www.google.com) to search.

It'll work, I have a P-60 running win3.11 now that can access the internet with no problems. It might not be easy to find a copy of IE 4 that will run on win3.x, but it can be found if you look. I didn't have to install anything but IE, and used IE 3.01 from my Sound Blaster 16 Driver & Utility CD. Works perfect.

Check through the CDs you already have, especially some older ones, if you browse them in Windows Explorer you'll often find goodies stashed away in a folder that you'd never know about otherwise. I have IE in different versions on about a half dozen CDs around here, and 2 or 3 have it for win3.x.

Check resale shops and garage sales for any CDs that may be around. I have installed IE 5 from an Earthlink CD without actually installing their internet service, others should be available too that have the browsers included. I've even seen game CDs that had web browsers included...

Paleo Pete, Using Reid's suggestion I've discovered a little-known (to me!) section of Tucows which lists Win 3x progs, including browsers,at http://classic.tucows.com/win3xsoft.html (http://http://). A few interesting hours ahead, I think.
Thanks.

Don't know what happened to your link, it comes up as http://http:// and the good old "Cannot find Page" page.

SimTel (http://www.simtel.net/) might also have some good downloads for win3.x. Worth spending some time looking around, one of my favorites for a long time. Tucows has been a favorite for ages too, plenty good stuff there as well.
