Install more RAM memory for Dell Dimension Desktop L800CXE. I am trying to install more memory and when I do I get an error message. So I boot to BIOS and see the settings and I notice the RAM cannot be adjusted even in the advanced tab. There is a BIOS update. This is a bit scary since this PC is old and i do not want to ruin it. I was able to install Windows XP and it runs fine most of the time. But there are times when it can really be sluggish.
256 mb more if possible on top of the 128mb already.
Windows XP SP3
The BIOS only has 128 mb RAM... I cannot change it. Maybe the update will help?
If this helps this is what is on the sticker...PC133 256MB. It is double sided. The one inside the system is One sided with 8 chips.

More info on RAM chips. My vision is not too good so I hope this is right. On the chips this is the following:

0130NT

SEITEC

PM72V28841CT-8

Do I need a BIOS update? And will that help me install more RAM? Or is there something else I can do to increase the RAM in BIOS? Is it a compatability issue? Any other ideas?

You can only have 512MB total RAM in that PC, and only 256MB in each of 2 slots. Adding memory up to that point is automatically detected when booted.

It is the mainboard that is the limiting issue here, not a BIOS setting.

You also must use PC100 SDRAM in both slots.
