View Full Version : I can't delete Win2000 - HELP!
Hi every1,
I want to delete win2k because it runs just too slow on my machine, it takes me 5 mins to start it up because I only have 64MB RAM !!!!
I tried to use the restore disk that came with the machine but that won't work at all. My file system currently is NTFS.
I tried formatting c: from windows explorer but that doesn't work either.
And then I loaded up in the MS-DOS commmand prompt and tried
format c:\x and that didn't work either.
It said that my drive was mounted and that I had to dismount my harddrive, and then it gave me the option for windows to do it for me, and so after I said yes, it then said the drive was locked!!!
Whats happening
Please Help Me delete this op.sys PLEASE :-)

I can't remember the specs on your machine but I would assume its a standered setup. Sounds to me like your format proceedure is not exactly right. What OS are you going to use? Do you have a GOOD boot disk for that OS? Are you trying to save anything on the HD?
Let us know these answers and it should be a pretty standered proceedure.

Hey there BassMan,
thanks so much for replying to me.
I have a compaq aramda laptop...333Mhz, 64MB RAM, 6 GB Harddisk.
my format procedure under the command prompt is...."format c:"
I am going to use Win98 (hopefully!!)
I have a system restore disk for win95 (came with my machine)
I have a CD for win98
I have saved everything so I don't mind deleting everything!!
Thanks again for helping me.
I'll be waiting in anticipation for your reply.

Hi,
Seen this done only once and man he flew through it quick. Had a associate
reloading a computer that Win2k on it and had to go back to Win98se due to
hardware compatibility. First he set the bios to boot off the cdrom, insetred the Win98se disk and ran the setup proceedure. At this point he was able to fdisk and reformat the hard drive to Fat32. Not sure if I missed anything or if the laptop supports booting from the cdrom. Hope this helps.

Thanks Hardtek for your reply and help,
I tried to do what you had written to me but that doesn't work either unfortunately......I might go to my mates to see if he has a copy of Partition Magic..............I'm pretty sure that this will do the job correctly.
If you have anymore tips then please write back ok :-))

Hi Beno.
I think the Win 98 disk will be your best bet if it is SE. I am not sure on all the details of booting from CD. If you were able to set BIOS to read CDrom first, then you should be able to access it and do an Fdisk. From there you can set your partitions after clearing old ones first. Then "Format c:/s:". Now you can set up Win98. Like I said, I am not totaly sure of the CD boot proceedure, so you may want to wait for a response from some of the big boys here. This would be the way to do it from floppy, setting up the CDrom drivers after format of course.
Good luck

Bassman and Hardtek advice should be all you need to get going. Your mistake Beno was in trying to format the system partition ( the c drive in your case) while in Windows 2000. That you can't do.
You need to boot into DOS so you can FDISK and reformat the partition.
Here's a link to a site which links to sites with boot disk you can download.
