I upgrade to XP SP3 and since no sound comes on when windows start. I went into sound in control panel and tried every other way,,,still no sound. It must be something in registry but can't put a finger on it. Anybody????

1. In "control panel->Sounds" are there sound [wav?] files allocated to events?

2. And when you choose [highlight] those events, do you see the address and name [and 3-letter extension] of the sound files to be played for those events?

3. And when you click on the play icon do they not play?

4. If not, you need to [properly] register a suitable [default] program to play and close that type of sound file.
Do you know how to do that?

p.s. I'm typing this from memory, because I'm working in Puppy Linux [puplet named BoxPup], not Windows.

Thks Sylvander. All good. The only thing missing is the windows start music.
Everything else is OK. In sound test, Start Windows plays. It's just when you open windowsbut I can live without it, just curious. Thks.

Hmm...
I guess there's a Windows XP configuration setting chosen to disable the "System Start" sound.

What I did [you might want to try your own version of this (suited to your PC)]:
1. Installed a FREE trial/lite edition of the Registrar Registry Manager (http://www.resplendence.com/registrar).

2. Used it to search my registry for the "data" = Windows Logon Sound.wav
This is the name of the file allocated as the sound for my PC's Windows logon sound.
That search found four instances in the registry of the allocation of this file name within sound schemes, as follows:
Default
Current
And 2 customized schemes.
See screenshots below.
You might want to take a look and see if everything looks OK or not.

Getting there buddy but could not get it to work.Sure has to be in this configuration area. I'll compare with one (SP2) that works and see. Let you know of the outcome. Thks

All troubles, be they major or minor, are worth investing an appropriate level of effort to eliminate.
"To take up arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing, end them".

It's a natural law that natural processes tend to cause an increase in chaos [which we humans consider to be troublesome]...
And that the decrease of chaos requires an input of WORK.
There's no way of escaping that natural fact.

e.g. In Thermodynamics, heat always naturally flows from hot regions to cold regions...
[Hence increasing the global ENTROPY (a measure of global thermal CHAOS?)]
And to force it to flow from cold to hot [using a heat pump], it is necessary to input WORK.
