You can either setup a peer-to-peer network using just ethernet cards, ethernet cables and T-Piece connectors. Another more expensive option is to setup a dedicated machine as a server.
the easiest and best way is to get the following...
1. buy an NIC(network interface card) for each computer.... linksys makes a good 10/100 card for under 20 bucks
2. buy either a 10/100 auto sensing HUB or SWITCH . A hub is all you need but a switch has better expandability(sp). And IMO is a way better choice.
Lynksys also makes both these items.
3. buy CAT5(catagory 5) RJ45 cables to go from each NIC to the hub or switch.
you can save money by making your own cables, but if this is your first network just start by buying the lengths you will need.
There is no need to build a server.....that will come in time http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
Ih yea...most of this stuff can be bought at a local Office Depot or other office supply/ computer store.
Do not let them talk you into 3com cards...yes they are good but not even worth the price
