Is there a way to have my computerrunning Windows NT 4.0 act as a server.
Currently it is connected to 3 machines, running Windows 98, via hub. But will in the near future be hooked to 7 machines. The hub has 8 ports
I thought I saw something on how to do this but cannnot find
it in any of my books on NT 4.0. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif
The stats on the NT 4.0 machine are
ABIT BE6 Motherboard
192MB ram
20 gig hdd Maxtor
48x blaster cd rom
sound blaster 16
Creative Labs Savage 4 32mb video card
Link sys PCI Network card
Any Ideas http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/tongue.gif

I vaguely remember reading about a hack to change NT4 workstation into the server edition, but whether it was fact or fiction I don't know. If it was (is) fact, then it's against the licensing agreement.
But you shouldn't need to do this to connect to "more" computers. Essentially as I understand you, you're talking about expanding the network from 4 to 8 interconnected machines, right? NT4 workstation can participate on a 8-computer network just the same as a 4-computer network. The limitation (if I remember correctly) is that the workstation can only have a limited number of users connected to *it* simultaneously. So if you want the NT4 workstation to serve files to all 7 other machines simultaneously, then yes you have a problem.
If this is the case, may I ask what are you serving -- mail, file-sharing, http...? Ever consider a Linux machine to do the job?

Sleddog thank for the response in answer to your question.....
I don't think the book was talking about a Hack. It was based on just using an NT 4.0 workstation as the server and had reference on how to
set up the computer.
The LAN is mostly used for my wifes business to share files on other machines. Kids use 2 computers hooked to the network to play games with limited access. My wife wants to be able eventually use Lotus Lotes and have all the files on 1 machine that can be accesed by all the other machines, also for backup purposes. Lastly we could have all machines on at the same time.
I have never used Linux. Would it have any compatablity issues with Windows 98 machines on it?
I've worked with Windows and can trouble shoot problems(thanks to this forum). Is Linux Harder? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif Easier? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I think the software is less expensive than the Windows versions. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
